Have you ever heard of the language Esperanto（世界語）? This is a man-made language for world use. But it hasn't been known by most of people around the world, let alone（更不必說）worldwide use. There are more than 3,000 languages in the world today, but only about ten are major（主要的）languages. Among them English is the most popular one in the world.
More than 350 million people speak English as their first language. Major English-speaking countries are Britain, Australia, New Zealang, Canada and the U.S.A. Another 400 million speak it was a second language. No one knows how many people speak English as a foreign language. They usually learn English as a school subject instead of learning it from their parents. Chinese is the only language with more speakers than English. This is because of the large population of China.
English is the language for a better understanding between people
of the world. It is also the language for business and science. Nearly half of all the business deals（交易）in Europe are done in English, and more than half of all science magazines（雜志）are in English. English is widely used in the world's computer network（計算機網絡）. And children should begin with English when they learn how to use computers and learn online. Through the English language people of different countries are able to work together and make things even better.

Since 1946, computers have changed our lives and our ideas.
The first computer was built at Harvard University（哈佛大學）in1946. It was as large as a room and quite difficult to use and slow to operate. But then, computers have become smaller, easier to use and faster to operate. Some computers can be smaller than a book.
Why is the computer useful to us? First, it can store（存儲）a lot of information. Second, a computer can operate very quicky-thousands of times faster than human（人類）and it won't be tired. Third, modern computers can be built into other kinds of machines, like radios, cars and planes. They can do a lot of work for us.
Soon, everyone, either at home or at work, will use some kinds of computers. The lives of all of us will be changed by this invention.
